2-week check-up
The 2-week check-up (bilans) is the first scheduled visit to the paediatrician after leaving hospital. The doctor assesses weight, feeding, healing of the navel and the child’s general condition. They may also assess the hips and remind parents about a hip ultrasound or refer the child for one. In Poland, POZ visits are free.
What to expect
A short visit focused on feeding and basic health parameters. The doctor will examine the baby's whole body and answer the parents' questions.
What the doctor checks
- Weight and length — Checking whether the baby is gaining weight properly after birth.
- Jaundice — Assessment of skin and sclera colour — physiological jaundice should be fading.
- Navel — Checking healing of the umbilical stump and whether there are any signs of infection.
- Hips (ultrasound) — Hip ultrasound to rule out developmental dysplasia.
- Feeding — Assessment of feeding technique, latching to the breast, or bottle feeding.
What to ask your doctor
- Is my baby’s weight normal?
- How often and how much should the baby eat?
- When should jaundice go away completely?
- How should I care for the navel area?
- When is the next visit and vaccination?
