3-month check-up

A check-up around 3 months may assess motor and neurological development: head control, muscle tone and response to surroundings. It can be part of care in the first half-year; the exact timing and scope depend on the POZ clinic and the child’s needs.

What to expect

The doctor will assess progress in motor and social development. Vaccination may also take place during this visit.

What the doctor checks

  • Motor development — Whether the baby lifts their head and upper chest while lying on their tummy.
  • Vision and tracking — Whether the baby visually follows moving objects and faces.
  • Social contact — Assessment of whether the baby smiles, coos, and responds to voices.
  • Hearing — Response to sounds — whether the baby turns their head towards the source of a sound.
  • Weight — Growth curve review — the baby should roughly double birth weight by about 5 months.

What to ask your doctor

  • When should we start introducing solids?
  • Is my baby’s sleep pattern normal?
  • How can I support motor development?
  • Is the cooing appropriate for this age?
  • When are the next vaccinations due?
