3-year check-up
The 3-year check-up is preparation for kindergarten: assessment of speech, independence, vision and hearing. A free preventive visit.
What to expect
A comprehensive assessment of readiness for preschool. The doctor may issue a certificate for the facility.
What the doctor checks
- Speech — The child should speak clearly enough for unfamiliar people to understand and use multi-word sentences.
- Coordination — Whether the child jumps on two feet, rides a tricycle, and draws a circle.
- Vision and hearing — Screening of vision and hearing before starting preschool.
- Social behaviour — Assessment of play with other children, understanding rules, and expressing emotions.
- Independence — Whether the child uses the toilet, eats independently, and dresses with some help.
What to ask your doctor
- Is the child ready for preschool?
- How can we help with preschool adaptation?
- Is speech sufficiently developed?
- How should we manage difficult emotions?
- Is an eye examination needed?
