6-month check-up
A check-up around 6 months is an important review of the first half-year: growth, nutrition, introducing solids and motor development. In practice, it may be part of the 2–6 month bilans or a separate POZ follow-up visit.
What to expect
An important visit about introducing solids. The doctor will assess whether the baby is ready for solid foods and how to do this safely.
What the doctor checks
- Motor development — Whether the baby sits with support and rolls from tummy to back and back again.
- Teething — Assessment of the gums — the first teeth usually appear around 6 months.
- Introducing solids — Discussion of when and how to introduce solid foods — based on WHO guidance.
- Vision — Whether the baby focuses on small objects and reaches for toys.
- Hearing and speech — Assessment of whether the baby makes varied sounds and responds to their name.
What to ask your doctor
- How should we introduce solids properly?
- What should not be given to a baby in the first year?
- How should we care for the first teeth?
- Is the baby sitting properly?
- When should the baby start crawling?
