6-week check-up
The 6-week check-up assesses the child’s development in the first weeks of life — weight, reflexes, response to sound and light. It often coincides with the start of the PSO vaccination schedule. Free in Poland.
What to expect
The doctor will check how the baby has developed over the first 6 weeks. This is also a visit for the mother — to assess recovery after childbirth.
What the doctor checks
- Weight and length — The baby should have regained birth weight and be gaining about 150–200 g per week.
- Vision — Assessment of whether the baby follows a face with their eyes and reacts to light.
- Reflexes — Examination of primitive reflexes: grasp, Moro, and sucking — to assess the nervous system.
- Hips (ultrasound) — A second hip ultrasound if the first one showed abnormalities.
- Muscle tone — Assessment of whether the baby lifts their head while lying on their tummy.
What to ask your doctor
- Are my baby’s reflexes normal?
- When should my baby start smiling?
- Is breastfeeding going well?
- How can I support visual development?
- When is the first vaccination?
